Shabbat Shalom in memory of Holocaust survivor Margaret Newman. She was born Margaret Kaufman in 1923 in Satu Mare, Romania. The Kaufman family remained in Satu Mare until 1944, when they were forced into the Satu Mare ghetto before being put on a train to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Margaret was selected for slave labor, and the rest of her family was selected for the gas chambers.
After liberation, she returned home only to find that her entire family had been murdered except for her brother. A few months later, her boyfriend Sam Newman returned from Auschwitz. The two were from the same town and fell in love before the war. Once reunited, they married and decided to leave Romania, eventually making their way to Montreal in 1951.
Margaret and Sam settled in Côte Saint-Luc, Montreal and together they raised a loving family. Margaret passed away in June 2024 at the age of 102 and left behind a legacy that includes children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
