Shabbat Shalom from Holocaust survivor Margaret Newman. Born Margaret Kaufman, on March 29, 1923, in Satu Mare, Romania. The Kaufman family remained in Satu Mare until 1944, where they were forced into the Satu Mare ghetto, before being put on a train to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Margaret was selected for slave labor; the rest of her family was selected for the gas chambers.
After liberation, she returned home only to find that her entire family had been murdered, except for her brother. A few months later, her boyfriend, Sam Newman, returned from Auschwitz. The two were from the same town and fell in love before the war. Once reunited, they married and decided to leave Romania; eventually making their way to Montreal in 1951.
Margaret and Sam settled in Côte Saint-Luc, Montreal and today, Margaret has a loving family, including five great-grandchildren.
