September 5, 1972, is known as the darkest day in Olympic history: the date of the Munich Massacre. During the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, eleven Israeli Olympic team members were taken hostage by a Palestinian terrorist group and eventually killed, along with a German police officer. The Olympic games were suspended for 24 hours to hold memorial services for the athletes.
