The Great Dohány Synagogue in Budapest, Hungary. Constructed between 1854-1859, Dohány Street Synagogue is Europe’s largest and the second largest synagogue in the world.

During the Holocaust, the synagogue stood in the heart of the Jewish ghetto and used by the Nazis as a communication base. Over 2,000 Jews who died of starvation and cold in the ghetto were buried in a mass grave in the synagogue’s garden.

The synagogue itself suffered significant damage during the bombing of Budapest, but was meticulously restored by 1998.

Today, this architectural masterpiece serves as one of Budapest’s main tourist attractions, as well as an active house of worship, primarily hosting services during the Jewish High Holidays.
