On August 30, 1942, Pastor André Trocmé urged the congregants in his overflowing church to “Do the will of God, not that of men.” When the deportations of Jews began in France during the summer of 1942, he encouraged his congregation to provide shelter to any Jew who sought refuge.
“These people came here for help and for shelter. I am their shepherd. A shepherd does not forsake his flock. I do not know what a Jew is. I know only human beings.”
