This is Gerald, affectionately known as Papa. Papa was born in 1916, in the East End, where he grew up with his 2 sisters.
As a young man, during the war, Gerald served in the armed forces; he was then awarded for his bravery with a certificate and was mentioned in dispatches.
On Papa’s 100th birthday we celebrated with some kichel and chopped herring. Gerald, as he layed the Tefillin, said the following, “It’s not every day that you put on Tefilllin on your 100th birthday!”
