Konrad Bloch was born on January 21, 1912 in Neisse.
Bloch was a biochemist who went on to receive the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1964. Bloch was a child of a middle class family. He studied in Munich and due to the fear of the Nazis he fled to Switzerland and then to America. In America Bloch went to Columbia University and got his PHD in biochemistry. He taught in the school for a few years following his graduation. Following his stint at Columbia, Bloch went on to teach at Harvard and Florida State University.
In 1964, Bloch won the Nobel Prize for his discovery in mechanism and regulation of cholesterol and fatty acid metabolism. In 1988, Bloch was given the National Medal of Science.
