What do the logos for I <3 NY and the Celebrate Israel Parade have in common? Both were designed by Milton Glaser, one of the most renowned graphic designers in American history.
Milton Glaser was born on June 26, 1929, to Hungarian Jewish immigrants in the South Bronx. A graduate of the High School of Music & Art and Cooper Union, Glaser co-founded Push Pin Studios and New York Magazine, revolutionizing both art and publishing.
He helped shape the landscape of pop culture and was responsible for influential designs ranging from the psychedelic Bob Dylan poster to the final season cover art for Mad Men. In 1977, he redesigned the DC Comics “bullet” and in the 1980s, he created the NJ Transit logo, which remains in use today. Glaser was the first graphic designer to receive the National Medal of Arts and also earned a lifetime achievement award from the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum. His work is held in major institutions, including MoMA and the Centre Pompidou.
Milton Glaser died five years ago, on June 26, 2020, his 91st birthday. Today, his legacy lives on in his timeless works. May his memory be a blessing.
