Holocaust survivor Alice Adamek (née Herman) was born on February 1, 1926 in Bunkovce, Czechoslovakia. Alice and her family were taken from their home to the Uzhgorod Ghetto on the first day of Passover in 1944.
They were deported to Auschwitz on Shavuot and Alice’s parents were gassed immediately upon arrival. Alice and her sister Frida were forced on the infamous death march from Auschwitz in January 1945. They were taken to the Ravensbrück women’s camp where they were liberated by the Red Army at the end of April. Alice travelled back to her hometown to find that all her family’s belongings had been looted by the neighbors and now resided in their homes.
She emigrated to Australia in 1950 and raised a loving family. Alice has 11 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and currently lives with her children in Sydney. She is pictured here with her great-grandson Judah Friedman. While the Nazis used “Jude” as a term of degradation, this little boy was given the name Judah with love and pride.
