“This morning I got on a bus to move for the fourth time in six weeks and I was on the verge of tears. I had just absorbed what spending a shutdown in my sherut apartment will look like and that I’ll have to spend the chagim (holidays) there too. I don’t know when I’ll be able to see my family again, and not being able to spend chagim with the few relatives I do have in Israel was just so overwhelming.
As I was standing on the 75 trying to figure out how I’m going to manage my year of sherut during a pandemic someone handed me this note, and I started crying. My immediate family is in America and in that sense I’m very much alone, but that note reminded me of why I (moved to Israel) made Aliyah.
So to the woman on the bus to Har Nof this morning at 9:30 AM, thank you for reminding me why I chose Israel to be my forever home. (The note says ‘A hug and a deep breath. ❤️ a sister)” – Nechama Peikes, Lone Bat Sherut-National Service Volunteer
