During WWII, Jews in Budapest were brought to the edge of the Danube River. They were ordered to remove their shoes and were then shot and killed, falling into the water below.
Shoes on the Danube Promenade, created by Can Togay and Gyula Pauer in 2005, features 60 pairs of iron shoes lining the riverbank, a poignant memorial to the victims.
Since October 7, yellow ribbons have been placed on the shoes for the hostages still held captive in Gaza.
