Jerry Seinfeld was born in Brooklyn on April 29, 1954. His father, Kalman, was of Austrian descent and known to have collected jokes during his service in WWII, while his mother, Betty, was the daughter of Syrian Jews from Aleppo.
Jerry describes himself as growing up in a Jewish home, saying, “Went to temple, kept kosher, two sets of dishes.” As a teenager, in 1971, he volunteered on a kibbutz in Israel. In 1976, the comedian made his stand-up debut, and in 1981, he appeared on The Tonight Show. By the late 1980s, Seinfeld was one of the highest-profile stand-up comedians in the US. He soon teamed up with Larry David to co-create the TV sitcom ‘Seinfeld,’ which first aired on July 5, 1989.
This week, the comedy legend will celebrate his 70th birthday! #MazalTov
