It is the largest synagogue in Rome and was constructed as magnificent as it is in order to showcase the revival of the Jewish pride in Rome after the terror of the ghetto and destruction of Jewish life. The women section overlooks the men section. The rainbow colors of the interior of the dome were used to represent the covenant between the Jewish people and God. In 1982, there was a terrorist attack in Rome. Ever since, the government of Italy provides all of the synagogues of Rome with security. Today, the Jewish community in Rome pay a fee and do not have any specific membership to a synagogue: they are free to go to any one they want.
