Golda Meir was a teacher and an Israeli politician. She was among the founders of the State of Israel and served as its fourth Prime Minister, making her Israel’s first and the world’s third woman to hold this position.
Born Golda Mabowitz on May 3, 1898, in Kiev, Ukraine, she moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1906. From 1916 to 1917, she attended what is now the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In 1921, Golda and her husband, Morris Meyerson, moved from the U.S. to a kibbutz. On May 14, 1948, she was one of 24 people who signed the Israeli Declaration of Independence. By March 17, 1969, she became the Prime Minister of Israel and the first female head of state in the Middle East.
In 2020, Golda was among TIME magazine’s “100 Women of the Year,” which is TIME’s list of the most influential women of the past century.
