This is a picture of me and my grandmother, she died when I was 9. My grandmother Henrietta Milstein (née Haas) was the founder of Burlington Coat Factory and a Holocaust refugee from Vienna.
2 years ago I naturalized as an Austrian citizen under a new law for Holocaust descendants.
86 years ago Austria was willfully annexed by Germany in the Anschluss. Jews in the military were expelled, stripped of their rank and titles.
2 weeks ago I was sworn in as a member of the Austrian Bundesheer. I’m proud to be the first Jew to naturalize as a Holocaust descendant to serve in the Austrian military.
