Felix Nussbaum

Nussbaum was arguably on his way to becoming one of the great painters of the 20th century, when his life was cut short by the Holocaust.
To hide from the Nazis, Nusbaum emigrated to Belgium in 1935. The family went into hiding, but were betrayed. In the summer of 1944, they were deported to Auschwitz and murdered there.
In large part due to the efforts Nussbaum made to hide his work with non-Jewish friends before his deportation to Auschwitz, much of his work survived. His artwork gives a rare glimpse into the essence of one individual among the victims of the Holocaust.
