A week ago, I met Edward Mossberg at March of the Living International in Auschwitz. He has worn the striped uniform ever since.

His granddaughter who was walking with him wore her grandmother’s uniform. Mosberg held a Torah with the names of the camps that he and his wife had survived.

During his speech, Mossberg shouted:
“For me Sunday is Holocaust Day, and Monday is Holocaust Day, and Tuesday is Holocaust Day, and Wednesday is Holocaust Day, and Thursday is Holocaust Day, and Friday is Holocaust Day, and so is every day since my parents and brothers were murdered in Auschwitz.”
His words echoed in my mind for a long time.
I returned to Israel, and slowly, along with Mussberg’s words, other words began to play in my head:
Sunday is Independence Day, and Monday is Independence Day, and Tuesday is Independence Day, and Wednesday is Independence Day, and Thursday is Independence Day and Friday is Independence Day.

We are fortunate that we have been privileged to be free in our country.

Happy Independence Day!
