Ruth and Elliot Handler were high school sweethearts. The two got married in 1938 and later became co-founders of the Mattel toy company. In 1959, Ruth created the iconic Barbie doll, inspired by their daughter Barbara. In 1968, Elliot helped develop Hot Wheels, a popular line of toy cars.
