Once there was a gentile who came before Shammai and said, “Convert me to Judaism, on the condition that you teach me the entire Torah while standing on one leg.” Shammai took a measuring rod and chased him away.
The gentile then came before Hillel with the same request. “What is hateful to you, don’t do to others – this is the entire Torah, and the rest is just commentary. Now go and learn,” was Hillel’s response.
