“Meet Yona Schwartz, one of our wonderful — and invaluable! — Shaare Zedek volunteers.
Parashat Shoftim is Yona Schwartz’s Bar Mitzvah portion. At 92 Yona is a compassionate and dedicated man who volunteers three times a week in our Bendheim Department of Cardiology in the Jesselson Heart Center. He’s been doing so for about the last 10 years, since he and his late wife were treated at Shaare Zedek.
Yona is a Holocaust survivor, of a labor camp in the Ukraine. After he came to Israel he fought in the War of Independence, the 1956 Sinai Campaign, the Six Day War and then the Yom Kippur War.
Working in the cement business since the establishment of the state, Yona was constantly involved in developing the Land of Israel and helping others. In recognition of his many years of service, last year he received an Award for Volunteer Services from the Ministry of Health.
Yona takes great pride in his son, Prof. Dov Schwartz (a 2015 recipient of the EMET Prize for Art, Science, and Culture), daughter-in-law, six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
The staff at Shaare Zedek Medical Center is very appreciative of Yona’s assistance and very much enjoys his company.
Yona, we wish you much good health and happiness and many more years volunteering at Shaare Zedek.
#ShabbatShalom” – Shaare Zedek
