One of the consequences of the restoration of the Jewish soul every Rosh Hashanah is the return of that inner spark of sanctity that somehow has lain dormant all year. Liberated from his material impulses, every Rosh Hashanah the Jew pleads for and achieves the renewal of the inner spiritual drive.
In truth, this spiritual drive is hardly new. When the First Tablets were given, a spark was implanted in every Jewish soul, a spark of the Divine and a permanent reminder of the Tablets. Gd’s word was written not only on the Tablets but also engraved in every Jewish soul. As it says (Shemos 32:16) ‘and the script was Gd’s script engraved on the tablets’ – of every Jewish soul!
Along with that permanent impression of the Divine embedded in the Jewish psyche came the promise of eternal life and freedom from the Evil Inclination (yetzer hara). Though this spark was lost when Israel sinned and worshipped the golden calf, it can be and is restored every Rosh Hashanah as we pray –

restore that spark of life!
